How to select products for “special offer” price rule

The quantity discount allows you to offer a discount on specific products when users added to cart one or more items you previously selected.

Before analyzing how to configure the rule detail, you must know how to select products.

In “Apply adjustment to” field, select the products on which you want to apply the discount, and in “Apply To” field, select the products on which you want to apply the control for the quantity in the cart.

Select products

The variable products are supported: the plugin allows to select single product variations in correspondence to “Apply to” and “Apply Adjustment to” options

Apply to

Select in “Apply to” the product typology on which you want to apply the control for the quantity “Cart” page.

Apply to

You can choose from:

  • all products in the cart
  • only selected products
  • all products of the shop except selected ones
  • all products related to one or more product categories
  • all products of the shop that are related to the specified categories
  • all products of the shop that are related to the specified tags
  • all the products related to one or more vendors (possible only if you are using YITH WooCommerce Multi Vendor)

Apply adjustment to

When there are the minimum required conditions to use the discount, the rule is applied only to products specified in “Apply Adjustment to”.

Apply adjustment to

The discount can be applied:

  • to the same products on which the control of the quantity has been applied
  • to all products in the cart
  • to all products you selected
  • to all products in the cart except those you selected
  • to all products in the cart that are related to one or more categories
  • to all products in the cart except those related to selected categories

How to set quantity for “special offer” price rule

The quantity is calculated according to how it has been selected in “Quantity based”.
Before analyzing the possible options, we must specify that the requested quantity must be inserted in “Special offer Rules -> Purchase”

Quantity required

Let’s analyze the possible options available in the plugin to calculate the quantity of product in the cart:

  • “Item quantity in cart line”: the quantity is calculated on each product line in the cart, among those selected in “Apply to”.
Product variations are considered as different products, for this reason (in this modality) two or more variations of the same product aren’t added up.
Shown below, two screens for example.

In relation to the example above, the rule provides, in case one of the products added in the cart has a quantity of 2, a 100% discount on “headphone Over-Hear”. The product that satisfy this condition is “Transformer book T3000”.

  • “Single Product”: the quantity is calculated separately for all the products added to cart, among those selected in “Apply to”. The difference compared with the previous case, is about variations of the same product which are considered by the system as a unique product and, therefore, their quantities are added up.
Here is an example to explain it better.

Single Product example - Admin View

Single Product example - User View

The discount rule has been set as follows: if there are 2 “Headphone Over-Ear” in the cart and/or 2 “Camera Bag”, a 100% discount will be applied on “Transformer Book T300” product.
As shown in the second image, the discount has been correctly applied, as both “Camera Bag” and two variations of “Headphone Over-Ear” guaranteed the requested quantity (regarding variations, their quantities have been added up and considered as unique).

  • “Single product variation”: the quantity is calculated separately on all products in the cart that are among those selected on “Apply to”.
Please note: each single product variation is considered as single product and their quantities are not added up.

Single Product Variation example - Admin View

Single Product Variation example - User View
In this case, the discount has been applied because one variation of “Headphone Over-Ear” (one of the products selected in “Apply To”) has a quantity of 2 and the condition of minimum requested quantity has been satisfied. Differently from the previous case, this time each single variation is considered as single product and the total quantity of variations is not a valid element to satisfy the rule.

  • “Sum of all products in list or category list”:to apply the discount, the number of products added to the cart (chosen among those specified in Apply to) has to be specified in Special Offer Rules > Purchase.
In our example, as we have selected quantity as 2, cart has to contain at least 2 items of the specified product if we want the discount to be applied.

Repeat rule

Enabling option “Repeat” allows to repeat the application of the discount each time conditions are satisfied. For example, if we have set these values “Purchase > 2”, “Receive > 1” and “Repeat > true”, the discount will be applied to the product listed in “Apply adjustment to” each time two items of the products specified in “Apply to” are purchased.

Repeat rule

How to show note on products

To inform the users about the benefits you offer on the purchase of your products, you can insert some notes to show on the pages of the products for which you apply a discount or are provided to get one.

You can show two different notes on each product for any discount rule of “Quantity discount” or “Special offer” type:

  • one shows in the products related to the achievement of the discount associated with the rule (Notes shown on “Apply to” products)
  • the other shows in the products on which the discount effectively applies  (Notes shown on “Apply adjustment to” products)

How to select users for the price rule

Combine discount rules

  • By default, you can’t apply two or more rules at the same time. The only rule applied will be the first in the insertion ordering.

However, if you want the rule you selected to be applied in combination with other price rules, enable the option called With other rules.

With other rules

If you want to apply the discount also to “on sale” products, enable the option below called Apply if the product is on sale. The discount will apply to the sale price.

Please note: you can apply only one quantity discount per product at the same time

Cart Discount

In the case of a discount rule on the cart, if the discount is of fixed price type, you can’t combine it with other discount rules since the cart total will be the same as the one provided by the “Fixed price” rule.

How to exclude items from rules

The plugin allows to prevent the use of configured rules for a specific selection of users and products of the shop.
First of all, in order to create such a rule, go to section Price Rules and create a new rule by selecting the type Exclude items from rules.

Exclude items from rules

The option Discount Schedule allows you to select start and end dates for the exclusion rule. The option User Status allows you to specify a list of users that have to be excluded from all discount rules already configured.

  • Exclude all users of your shop.
  • Exclude all users with one the WordPress roles specified.
  • Exclude all users except for those with one the WordPress roles specified.
  • Exclude all selected users
  • Exclude all users except for the selected ones.

The option “Apply to” allow to select products to which exclusion rule is applied.

  • All products in the shop.
  • Selected products.
  • All products in the shop except for the selected ones.
  • All products belonging to selected categories.
  • All products in the shop except for those belonging to selected categories.

Rule priority

For every rule you set, you can define a priority level.

As rules are processed one after the other, stating a priority order will let you choose which rule has to be applied first and which second.

Please, consider that priority both helps you manage rules that apply on the same product and refers to all rules of the same type. So, there are two distinct priority lists for rules set up in the Price Rules tab and those in the Cart Discounts.

Let’s see together which priority the system follows while processing the rules.

First of all, the system processes rules defined in Price Rules tab. It starts with Quantity Discount rules: if there’s a quantity rule applying to a product, all other rules (either Quantity discount or Special offer) applying on the same product will be then ignored, even if the option With other rules is enabled.

If there are, though, more than one quantity discount or special offer rules applying to different products, they will be all applied, as they do not apply to the same product and do not conflict with one another. This applies only if the option With other rules is enabled.

After that, rules defined in Cart discounts tab will be processed and will apply on the cart total.

Let’s make an example to make things easier.

  1. Quantity discount rule, priority 2: Product A costs $10, but it costs $5 if quantity is greater or equal to 10.
  2. Special offer on Product A, priority 1: buy one and get one at 50%
  3. Special offer on Product B, priority 1: buy one and get one at 50%
  4. Cart discount rule, priority 1: 20% off for everyone

Our cart contains

  • Product A ($5 to $10): 12 items
  • Product B ($18): 2 items

Price rules (Quantity discount and Special offer) will be processed first, so, No. 1, 2, 3.
Rule No. 1 and 2 apply on the same product (Product A), so, only rule No. 1 is applied as it is a Quantity discount rule and is processed first, regardless of the priority (siamo proprio sicuri o viene applicata la 2?)
Product A costs $5 each.
Rule No. 2 is so ignored.
Rule No. 3 is applied on Product B. So, one is full price $18, the second one is at half price $9.
Now the cart subtotal is (12 x $5) + $18 + $9 = $87
Rule No. 4 applies on the cart subtotal, so, final price is $69.60
