So, based on specific conditions in the checkout, European customers might be asked to two-factor authenticate their payment with additional control, which will depend on the bank&#8217;s preferred system (e.g., a one-time code sent to their phone or fingerprint authentication through their mobile banking app).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to <strong>all customer-initiated<\/strong> payments but does <strong>not<\/strong> apply to payments that are considered <strong>merchant-initiated<\/strong>, like recurring direct debits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recurring payments with YITH Subscriptions (v. 1.6.1 or greater)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under this new regulation, specific types of low-risk payments may be exempted from Strong Customer Authentication. Payment providers like Stripe can request these exemptions when processing the payment. The cardholder\u2019s bank will then receive the request, assess the risk level of the transaction, and ultimately decide whether to approve the exemption or whether authentication is still necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most relevant exemptions for internet businesses are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low-risk transactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payments below \u20ac30<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixed-amount subscriptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Merchant-initiated transactions (including variable subscriptions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trusted beneficiaries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phone sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corporate payments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/stripe.com\/it\/guides\/strong-customer-authentication#exemptions-to-strong-customer-authentication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>this section<\/strong><\/a> of Stripe documentation for more information about each of these exemptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two additional exemptions apply regardless of payment amount and frequency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You saved the card details before September 14, 2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You explicitly tell Stripe the transaction is <strong>off-session&nbsp;<\/strong>(all recurring payments initiated by our YITH Stripe plugin are marked as <em>off-session<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about SCA grandfathering, please, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/stripe.com\/docs\/strong-customer-authentication\/grandfathered-agreements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>this page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-authenticated saved cards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For those customers that have saved their card details on Stripe before, it may happen that the bank will require them to authenticate also renewal orders with the same card, as the payment was not originally authenticated through this system. Our plugin gives users the possibility to authenticate the payment from <strong>My Account &gt; Payment Methods<\/strong>, by simply clicking on the <strong>Confirm <\/strong>button, as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.yithemes.com\/yith-woocommerce-stripe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/202\/2019\/09\/3.-Confirm-button.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.yithemes.com\/yith-woocommerce-stripe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/202\/2019\/09\/3.-Confirm-button.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-authenticated renewal orders &#8211; Email<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set up an email that will be sent whenever a recurring payment is stopped by the bank because it requires strong customer authentication.
