Updating Your Theme Files
From time to time, you will see a notice in Admin panel alerting you about updates available. In this section, you will learn how to install the updated files via FTP and via FileZilla.
1. Update alertBack to top
THEME UPDATE ALERT - Whenever we update our theme files, we will send an alert through your WP Admin panel. In this example, you see an alert for an update to The Polygon theme.
**Note – you might also find a second update alert here, warning you about an updated version of our plugins.
YOU CAN GET TO YOUR UPDATE SCREEN BY CLICKING ON “The Polygon” OR BY GOING TO YOUR LEFT SIDEBAR AND CLICKING ON “THEMES.”
In “Themes” Panel, the following alert will appear in a bar: “A new version of the The Polygon is available for download.”
Read “Update Download” instructions carefully.
BACKUP YOUR FILES! We highly recommend to do that each time you update files, it's the safest way to do that. There are many plugins that help you back up your files. Go to WordPress Plugins and try some of them. One we might suggest is XCloner.
Now go to your YIThemes account and download the updated files into your desktop.
Follow all steps in this manual to update your theme.
2. Update via FilezillaBack to top
Updating Via FileZilla - Now you will learn how to update your files using FileZilla client.
First, BACKUP YOUR FILES! This is the safest thing to do.
Next, download and install the FileZilla Client - http://filezilla-project.org/.
OPEN FILEZILLA, you will see something like that:
Enter your FTP Credentials, like in the image shown below:
Now “CLICK on QUICKCONNECT” and FileZilla will load your website.
Use the right side panel to navigate to your themes folder. In the example above, the theme folder is public_html/wp-content/themes/, however, not all web hosting have public_html, it may be something different in your server.
Now that your themes/folder is open, use the panel on the left to navigate to the place where you have extracted the theme folder. In this example, the extracted theme folder is in the desktop.
Drag and drop the extracted theme folder into your web hosting:
**Note – you may be asked to overwrite files and/or folder. Tick the option to "Always use this action" and click on "Ok.” Then, wait until all files are uploaded.
That's all there is to it!
Wait! Using this updating method you will overwrite all your custom code. Any changes made to your files will be lost.
If you do not want to lose changes, do not drop the entire folder (as explained above), just follow the steps below.
- The most important thing is to have a list of files with your custom codes.
In our example, we edited functions.php and custom.css by adding some code.
- To find out which individual theme files have been changed in the update, open theme changelog. You can find this in:
yourthemefolder/Changelog.txt. Every time we update the theme, we will use add a list with all we changed and files where they are, available in yourthemefolder/Changelog.txt file. Check the file list to be sure that your custom files have not been changed in this update.
Here is an example of ChangeLog List:
- Once you have downloaded the package of updated theme, you must transfer files online through "Drag and Drop" operation, as shown below.
- FileZilla will ask you to overwrite files and folders. Click on “Yes” and overwrite all files and folders.
- **Note - If your custom files are in the UPDATES list, you have to update them manually. You need to re-add your custom code to the updated file again, and only then will you be able to upload it, overwriting the file online.
3. Update via FTPBack to top
UPDATING YOUR REGULAR THEME FILES VIA FTP – You can also upload files via FTP. If you need guidelines on how to get to your FTP files, please go to Step One, Installing the The Polygon Theme Files.
In the meantime, download the YIThemes files onto your desktop…
DOUBLE-CLICK on zip package.
DOUBLE CLICK on The Polygon zip file to find “The Polygon” folder.
DRAG The Polygon FOLDER TO YOUR DESKTOP. Then, open your FTP files and navigate to the folder you have designated for your The Polygon theme. Open that folder, you will find WP-Admin, WP-Content, WP-Includes…
DOUBLE CLICK on Wp-Content…
DRAG YOUR “The Polygon” FOLDER from your desktop and drop it into this FTP folder.
**WARNING – Do not drag your The Polygon folder into other folders. IT MUST STAND ALONE!
OF COURSE, SINCE THERE IS ALREADY A "The Polygon" FOLDER IN YOUR FTP FILES, you will quickly be asked whether you’re sure you want to replace it. Click on “YES ALL” to replace the files.
Once the folder has finished uploading/replacing, it will momentary look as if you had two The Polygon file folders, but don’t worry; this is only because you haven’t refreshed it yet.
There is actually no need to refresh. That will happen automatically, once you close the folder.
Do not forget to CLOSE YOUR TWO FTP WINDOWS, then navigate back to your “Themes” window on your WP Admin panel. “Update” alert should be disappeared, and you should have now current files.
3. Update bundled pluginsBack to top
In order to update the plugins included within the theme, please, redirect your browser to the following page: http://<YourWordpressUrl>/wp-admin/admin.php?page=update-plugins-page.
And now you’re finished!
